What EDT involves
EDT is 12 one-hour sessions with an Approved Driving Instructor. Only an ADI can sign them off. A parent or friend can take you out between lessons, but that doesn't count as EDT.
The RSA says leave about two weeks between sessions and spread it over six months. You can go faster. Most people who rush still need extra hours before the test anyway.
Check your hours on the MyEDT portal. Give it about 10 working days after a lesson before it shows up. Bring the permit every time so Paul or Ruairi can record it.

Session 1 is first. Sessions 9 to 12 come after the middle block. Session 12 is night driving, so we book that in the evening. Weekdays we teach until 8pm.
Reduced EDT, logbook and the 6-month rule
If you've a qualifying foreign licence you might only need six sessions. That's reduced EDT. Tell us when you book.
You get a paper logbook as well as the online record. Keep it. If an instructor ever drops off the ADI register before uploading a session, a signed logbook is what the RSA will look at.
Finishing EDT doesn't mean you're test-ready. You also have to have held your first category B permit for six months. A lot of people finish the 12 hours, then book extra practice and a Killester pretest.
Common EDT questions
Can I switch instructor during EDT?
Yes. If you start with Ruairi and later want Paul for Killester, just say so. The 1-hour and 6-hour options make that easy.
Does EDT have to be in a manual?
No. You can do EDT in an automatic. The full licence is then automatic only. Automatic lessons are the same price.
Is 12 hours enough to pass?
It's the legal minimum. Nervous beginners and anyone sitting Killester usually need extra hours and a pretest. We'll tell you when you're ready.
